The Bristol arts charity Artspace Lifespace is marking its 20th anniversary with an Open Studios weekend at The Island. The event, running from October 15-18, will offer free access to much of the former police headquarters turned creative hub on Nelson Street. This annual celebration, much of which is completely free to join, invites visitors to explore the labyrinthine building and engage with its lively artistic community.
Founded in 2006 by The Invisible Circus, the organization moved to The Island in 2007. Since then, it has revitalized several neglected buildings, including Broadmead XP and Sparks Bristol. Notably, Artspace Lifespace has also hosted memorable Carnyville and Carny Village events, leaving lasting impressions on attendees.
A Weekend of Art and Community
Visitors can explore the studios of over 100 artists, view their work, and learn about their creative processes. The event also features an exhibition of pieces by these studio holders, offering a unique glimpse into the diverse talents housed within The Island. Alongside the exhibition, attendees can meet the artists in their studios, gaining insight into the methods and inspirations behind their creations.
Drop-in activities and bookable taster sessions will be available, covering a range of disciplines from pro-wrestling to aerial hoop, sewing and pattern cutting, classical Indian dance, ballet, and circus skills. These sessions provide an opportunity for visitors to try something new or deepen their understanding of various art forms.
Heritage and Music
The weekend includes heritage tours of The Island and the neighboring former magistrates’ courts, now managed by the Creative Youth Network. The Courts will open on Saturday afternoon, and the Creative Youth Network will host a free DJ set in The Island’s courtyard, adding a musical dimension to the festivities. These tours offer a rare chance to explore the historical aspects of the buildings and understand their transformation into cultural hubs.
Practical Information
Most activities are free, but advance booking is recommended for some workshops, taster classes, and heritage tours via headfirstbristol.co.uk. For more details, visit artspace.uk or follow @theislandbristol.
These offers provide an excellent opportunity to explore Bristol’s lively food, drink, and entertainment scene while supporting local businesses.
